Commedia dell’arte

a step-by-step pathway of drama games leading students into Commedia dell’arte, before they know that’s what they’re doing.

The aim: students discover physicality, masks, archetypes, improvisation, lazzi (comic routines), and stock situations through play — and only later do you reveal they’ve been learning the foundations of Commedia.

---

Drama Game Progression: Towards Commedia dell’arte

---

1. The Neutral Body

How it works: Students walk the space with relaxed, neutral bodies — no character, no exaggeration. Then, when a number or signal is called, they freeze into a strong physical “statue.”

Why this matters: Establishes body awareness and a baseline, from which exaggerated characters can grow.
Progression: Prepares them to adopt distinct physical archetypes.

---

2. Exaggerated Walks

How it works: Students walk across the room in different “body centers” (leading with the nose, belly, chest, knees, etc.). Each produces a new character.
Reflection: How does the change of center affect status, rhythm, or emotion?

Progression: These “body centers” map directly onto Commedia characters (e.g., Arlecchino leads with his hips, Il Dottore with his belly, Capitano with his chest).

---

3. Status Lines

How it works: Line students up from “lowest status” to “highest status” characters, based on physical presence. Try improvised encounters: the low-status must serve the high-status, then swap.

Progression: Builds awareness of hierarchy — central to Commedia (masters, servants, lovers).

---

4. Mask Exploration (or Hand-as-Mask if no masks available)

How it works: Give students neutral half-masks or have them cover part of their face with one hand, then experiment with movement.

Rule: the body must exaggerate to compensate for the hidden face.

Progression: Introduces mask discipline: larger-than-life physicality, clarity of gesture, and “playing to the audience.”

---

5. Archetype Machines

How it works: Assign a stock character archetype secretly (the greedy master, the sly servant, the pompous captain, the romantic lover). Students move through the space, exaggerating until their archetype is recognisable.

The class guesses who’s who.

Progression: Students begin to embody the stock roles of Commedia.

---

6. Gibberish Dialogue

How it works: In pairs, improvise a scene using only gibberish sounds and physical gestures.

Focus on rhythm, emotion, gesture, not words.

Progression: Trains exaggerated communication — a hallmark of Commedia, especially when playing to international audiences.

---

7. Lazzi Routines (Comic Business)

How it works: Introduce short, silly “lazzi” (e.g., tripping over, trying to carry something too heavy, failing to sit on a chair). Students build mini-scenes around them.

Progression: Builds comic timing and introduces the “interruptible” nature of Commedia — stories are often paused for a lazzo.

---

8. The Lovers’ Dilemma

How it works: Two “lovers” improvise a short scene, speaking in overblown, dramatic tones. Servants or masters enter to interrupt, confuse, or sabotage the romance.

Progression: Demonstrates the relationship-driven plots of Commedia, while keeping the humour physical and exaggerated.

---

9. Improvised Stock Scene

How it works: In groups of 4–5, students create a short improvised scene:

Two servants plotting mischief

A pompous master giving orders

Lovers trying to meet in secret

A Captain boasting and being deflated

Progression: Students pull together status, masks, archetypes, gibberish, and lazzi into one performance.

---

10. The Reveal: You’ve Been Doing Commedia dell’arte!

After the final scenes, you reveal:

This 16th-century Italian theatre form used exactly these archetypes, lazzi, masks, and improvisations.

Students can now identify Arlecchino, Pantalone, Il Dottore, Il Capitano, Innamorati, and more — because they’ve already embodied them.
